How we helped a global non-profit membership organisation’s rebuild its digital marketing function

Sector: Non-profit membership organisation

Services: Paid media audit, digital strategy, campaign planning, performance improvement framework

The Challenge

A global non-profit membership organisation was investing heavily in digital advertising across multiple platforms, including Google Ads, Facebook Ads and LinkedIn Ads.

Its campaigns were designed to support several different objectives at the same time: attracting new members, promoting conferences and events, and increasing awareness and usage of member services. But despite significant spend, performance was inconsistent and return on investment was unclear.

Like many organisations in the membership and non-profit sector, the client faced a familiar challenge: digital activity was happening across multiple channels, but without the strategic structure, measurement framework and campaign discipline needed to make that investment work harder.

They needed more than campaign tweaks. They needed a clearer digital marketing function, backed by practical guidance on where to invest, how to improve results, and how to build a more effective approach moving forward.

The Solution

We carried out a strategic review of the organisation’s digital marketing activity, with a particular focus on paid media performance across key platforms.

Our role was to assess what had been done previously, identify where budget and effort were being lost, and create a more robust framework for future activity. That meant looking beyond individual campaigns and addressing the bigger issue: how to align channels, messaging, targeting and measurement around the organisation’s actual business goals.

The result was a clear, actionable roadmap for future digital marketing activity, giving the client a stronger foundation for better decision-making, improved campaign performance, and more accountable spend.

What We Did

We began by analysing the client’s historic campaign activity across Google Ads, Facebook Ads and LinkedIn Ads to understand how budget had been allocated, what audiences were being targeted, and where performance issues were emerging.

From there, we identified the main barriers to return on ad spend, including weaknesses in campaign structure, targeting, messaging alignment and performance evaluation. Because the organisation was promoting multiple offers to multiple audience groups, it was especially important to bring more clarity and consistency to how campaigns were planned and assessed.

Our work included:

  • reviewing previous paid campaign activity across core advertising platforms
  • identifying inefficiencies and missed opportunities in targeting, messaging and budget allocation
  • assessing how well campaign activity aligned with the organisation’s different objectives
  • evaluating the overall approach to performance monitoring and campaign optimisation
  • developing a detailed set of recommendations and practical guidelines for future digital marketing activity

Rather than producing a generic audit, we created guidance the client could use operationally — helping internal stakeholders make better decisions about campaign planning, platform selection, budget use and ongoing optimisation.

Why It Worked

This engagement worked because we approached the challenge strategically, not tactically.

The issue was not simply that individual ads or campaigns needed adjustment. The deeper problem was that the organisation’s paid marketing activity had evolved across multiple platforms and objectives without a sufficiently clear framework for prioritisation, consistency or performance control.

By stepping back and reviewing the full picture, we were able to identify where spend was underperforming and why. Just as importantly, we translated those findings into practical guidance that the organisation could apply across future activity.

For membership organisations and non-profits, this is often the difference between digital marketing that feels busy and digital marketing that actually performs. When campaign objectives, audience targeting, platform strategy and measurement are properly aligned, spend becomes more efficient and results become easier to improve over time.

The Result

The client came away with a clearer, more structured approach to digital marketing and a detailed framework for improving future campaign performance.

Instead of continuing to invest heavily across multiple channels without a strong basis for optimisation, the organisation now had:

  • a better understanding of what had been limiting paid media performance
  • a clearer view of how different campaigns should support different organisational goals
  • practical recommendations for improving future channel strategy and spend efficiency
  • a more consistent foundation for planning, measuring and refining digital activity

For the client, this meant moving from fragmented campaign execution towards a more intentional, accountable and performance-focused digital marketing function.
